C4 gives rise to the phrenic nerve which innervates the diaphragm used for breathing, therefore any respiratory difficulties would be indicative. C5 gives rise to the upper portion of the brachial plexus, symptoms would occur in the upper shoulder and back area.

Symptoms are weakness in the upper arm specifically in the deltoid muscle with, in most cases, no significant numbness or tingling. Shoulder pain is also present. An x-ray and/or an MRI of the area will need to be done. Please see your doctor for a complete diagnosis.
