After a fly lays eggs, they hatch into maggots. The maggots feed on rotting vegetable or animal matter. When the maggots have grown to a sufficient size, they turn into pupae, a phase where the immature fly is inactive as it changes from larva to adult. When it has finished its transformation, it hatches into a fully-formed adult fly.

In the lifecycle of of a fly baby flies are maggots and not just small flies as many people believe. The maggots emerge from eggs laid by the adult fly and emerge as a maggot in warm temperatures within 8 to 20 hours after being laid. Baby flies are often called maggots. They come in the form of larvae before changing into flies, and thus look similar to tiny caterpillars.

Flies usually lay their eggs in a damp, dark place. The eggs hatch into maggots, which crawl around and feed. The next step is to transform to flies, so a maggot could be considered a baby fly.
