First, make sure you are using a heavy duty, flat or eggshell finish paint. After masking the surrounding wall areas, first paint the edges and the corner joints with a small sponge brush. Then using a medium size bristle brush, paint the stairs with smooth, even horizontal brush strokes (brushing lengthwise). Use several thin layers and finish with a sealant.

One of the most important things to consider when painting stairs is security. Stay away from high gloss and slippery paints! You don't want anyone slipping and breaking their necks in your staircase. Ask the clerk at your local hardware store for a "grainy" paint and explain what you plan to do. They sell special paints especially for that purpose.

Tape the area around the stairs so that you don't paint on the wall. Next I would make sure I use flat paint so that you don't slip on it.

If you are painting stairs you want to make sure you get certain paint that is able to paint over the type of material your stairs are. If they are wood you want to get wood paint. Afterwards you want to put a finish over it, because a lot of treading will wear the paint down.

be sure to use a paint that is intended for floors. this paint is intended to be walked on;ordinary paint is not and will start to wear or peel very quickly. use alow sheen because high gloss can be slippery when wet.
