The neutron was discoverd in the early 20th century. The difference is that for something to be discovered it had to already exist. The neutron has existed since the beginning of the universe and thus could only be discovered. To invent something is to create something entirely new out of already existing substances.

The neutron, one of three particles of an atom, was discovered by British physicist James Chadwick in 1932. Discoveries uncover already existing things. Inventions are the creation of new things.
