The Connecticut River originates in New Hampshire at the Fourth Connecticut Lake. From there is flows south. For much of its 407 miles, the river forms a border between New Hampshire and Vermont. Then it flows through Massachusetts. After leaving Massachusetts, the river flows through Connecticut itself and empties into Long Island Sound at Old Saybrook.
