Should I tip for takeout?

From a restaurant, as opposed to McDonald's take out or something.

For what? Ringing up the order, packing it in to go containers and carrying the food from the kitchen to the counter?

Yes, you should. It's the right thing to do.

I do tip for take out even though I dont think it is expected.. I generally tip close to 10%(never more) at a Sushi place I order from regularly.. I feel like they remember me, always do their best to take care of my order, and appreciate the additional money  add a comment

I never tip for take out. I know it's a hotly discussed topic, but your tip when you dine-in isn't for the cooks, right? It is split between the wait staff and the bus boys. Take out doesn't involve these services so why tip?

I really would not tip for going and getting your food. You give a tip when someone waits on you or delivers your food to the door. When you pick up your food for take out it doesn't take much effort on their part to wait on you. Tip for service-not the product!

No, there is no need to tip for take out. The only minor exception is if they are open extra late for your to pick up your order or made a special entree just for you.

It depends on the place. If it's casual dining, like Panera, then no, but if it's a place where they bring anything to your table, it is polite to tip.

But they aren't bringing anything to your table, so what am I tipping for?  add a comment
