Should I be suspicious of free computer software?

Is it usually a virus?

No. Anyway if you find something on the internet and you can download it for free, pay attention is there a company behind, there are lot of applications from big companies which are like Mozilla Firefox, OpenOffice, etc. Virus usually comes with some suspicious e-mail or downloading torrent(check the file which are not *.avi) or something like that.

Registered Open Source applications do exist. Unix, Adobe, ROS Robot Operating System, Text2Speech, FusionCharts Free, DVDx, Bugzilla and Apache are only a few examples.
