St. Augustine grass can turn yellow for several reasons. It may be a matter of your soil content containing too much clay. When this happens, water doesn't drain away properly and your grass "drowns." To introduce more topsoil, do so sparingly unless you are willing to re-seed your entire lawn. A broadcast spreader works perfectly for this.

Every plant gets a green color from chlorophyll. Without it, plants can turn yellow. Chlorophyll coverts carbon dioxide into oxygen and converts water into glucose. This only happens when the leaves of the plant or grass gets enough sunlight. This process is called photosynthesis. It may be because you grass isn't getting enough sunlight or water.

Some possibilities: not enough water, or most likely, chinch bugs. They are prevalent in the hottest part of the summer. Look for BB sized insects with white diamonds on their wings. Use a turf insecticide to control.

Your grass could have a fungus, lack of nitrogen, or an insect problem. Or it may needed to be watered.
