My golden retriever has an undescended testicle. What should I do?

Both should definitely be dropped by 8-10 weeks, so you may have a decision to make if your Retriever is this age and still has an undescended testicle. It's suggested that you should have the dog neutered, as the risks of cancer increase now. Also, this genetic trait is highly likely to be passed on.

Nothing should be done since it will not be a problem and occurs in quite a few males. The dog can be neutered and the good testicle can be removed without problems.

An undescended testicle in any breed of dog poses the potential for becoming cancerous at some point in the dog's lifetime. The best thing to do is to consult with your veterinarian about having the testicle surgically removed.

This condition is known as Cryptorchidism, the standard treatment for this condition is to have the dog neutered. He should be examined by your vet to rule out Monorchidism.
