You should take your dog to the vet as soon as possible since there are a lot of highly sensitive areas in the muzzle that could be damaged. Be careful when handling him though since many dogs, even our beloved family pets, may snap when in pain as a form of defense.

A swollen muzzle could be the result of another dog bite or tooth problem. Identify the problem if you can. If it appears to be a tooth problem, try to clean the area with a soft brush or even your finger wrapped with s absorbent cloth to remove a bone fragment or whatever else is festering the tooth.

Check to see if your dog has been introduced to a porcupine. The best way to do this is (if possible) visually first. If that fails, check very gently with your fingers. You may need a vet.

Check to make sure they haven't been bitten by anything. Check for any small cuts or anything else that looks bad. Make sure to check the outside of their mouth as well as the inside. If you can't find anything to explain it, or if the swelling it really bad, take them to your vet. Better safe then sorry.
