Question by  Jeenyus (64)

What is the best treatment for swollen ankles?

My are swollen after I sit at my desk all day.

Answer by  Aubs (1089)

Try and elevate your legs at work if it is possible; this will cause the blood to flow away from your ankles, thus reducing the swelling. It this is not an option, when you get home in the evening, make sure to prop your feet up and ice your tender ankles.

It is because your legs dangle and you don't get up and move very often so they are not getting the proper blood flow that they need.

It would be a good idea to prop your feet up whenever you can. Your legs are having a hard time circulating the lymphatic fluid sit you are sitting all day. You can also buy a device to use on your feet while you are sitting to keep circulation good.

One option is to wrap your legs or buy diabetic socks; you might also try decreasing the amount of salt you take in on a daily basis and getting more exercise.

Avoid sitting for prolonged periods during the day, drink plenty of water, if overweight lose it, avoid restrictive clothing and if swelling continues, see your doctor

Elevate your legs while sitting. You can do this by placing a small box under the desk. Stay away from salt and anything that would cause your legs to swell. Get up, walk around as much as possible. Rotate your ankles or elevelate your heel on the floor and move your foot towards the floor and up to the sky.

First, see a doctor. Could be caused by many things. Wear support hose or socks. A doctor can prescribe a water pill but find the cause.
