in order to properly measure and calculate your real cholesterol levels, fasting of at least 12 hours is required in order to take the same baseline evaluation as will provide an accurate level, without newly added cholesterol to your system.

To have one's cholesterol checked there are certain things that must be checked to make sure an accurate reading is obtained. First one must be healthy, certain illnesses can affect the results. Second one must not eat or drink anything but water for 14 hours prior to the test which is fasting. Also avoid alcohol for 48 hrs before testing.

Before a cholesterol test its almost neccisary to fast. This is because a cholesterol test is a blood test, and by eating right before a test can seriously alter the results. For best results, make sure that before you go in for the test, that you haven't eaten in atleast twenty four hours.

A cholesterol test always requires fasting beforehand in order for the test to have accurate results. Your doctor or the lab drawing the blood will be able to give you exact details, Typically a person needs to refrain from drinking or eating for 6-8 hours before taking the test. Occasionally you will need to fast longer.
