The black rose plant is not really a rose at all. It is a member of the Crassulaceae (Stonecrops), a succulent perennial known as Aeonium arboreum, and it comes from the Canary Islands. It is a different species from roses. Black rose plants get their name from their leaves which grow in rose-like patterns.

Black roses are roses, but they are not really black. They are usually very dark red, although they may appear black.
