Question by  dj (26)

Is procion dyes the best dye to use for tie dye, if so how do you use it to create a tie dye shirt.

I need to have my girl scout troupe create tie dye shirts and have no idea how or if Procion is the best dye to use.

Any cold-water fiber-reactive dye should work (Procion is one brand). All-inclusive kits (with instructions) for tie-dyeing up to a dozen shirts are sold at craft retailers. It takes 2 days.

RIT liquid dye works very well. Wet shirt first. Wring out until damp. Roll up shirt, place 5 rubberbands around it in different places. Put water in large pan, add dye when boiling, put shirt in pan, soak for 25 minutes. Wring out and let sit in plastic bag overnight. Rinse in cold water, dry in dryer to set dye.

Procion dyes are good quality but I suggest if this is your first experience with tie dye that you buy a kit at a craft store - several kinds available.

Procion is a good dye to use for shirts. Just pour the dye on the shirt, then roll or fold it up as tight as you can. Hold it with rubber bands. Then you can squirt the shirt with a variety of colors. When you're done, open it and hang it out to dry.

From personal experience, "RIT" dye is the best dye to use. It can be found at walmart in the laundry soap isle. It's fairly inexpensive and comes in a wide range of colors. Even more colors can be found on their website.
