For the first two or three weeks, you need to recover from the surgery. After that time, it may be okay to start with very light weights and gradually increase.

Refrain from doing so in the interest of your health until after you have given yourself the recommended time to heal. After a follow up with your doctor and permission, it should be okay. Pushing yourself too early may cause you to undo the repair and have a hernia all over agai.

I have had a hernia repair and the general advice that my doctor gave me was limit lifting that strains that area. Your doctor should give you a lifting restriction that is safe for you.
