Question by  mapple (18)

Is it okay for dogs to eat figs?

I have a fig tree in my backyard and I am not sure it will be safe for my new dog.

My 100 pound labradoodle gobbled tons of figs from my tree and experienced vomiting, diarrhea, and lots of bloody watery stool. IV fluids and a series of antibiotics seems to be treating him, but be careful. Figs are NOT poisonous, but if too many are eaten, they can be problematic.

Raw eggs: an enzyme in raw eggs interferes with absorption of a B vitamin. Can cause skin problems as well as problems with your dog's coat if raw eggs are fed for a long time. Also there is the possibility of food poisoning from bacteria like Salmonella or E. coli.  add a comment

My dog is a healthy, happy 16 year old. She scores a few bites of whatever I eat - including fig newtons. In the last year I found out about onions so I don't use onions in recipes. No chocolate, ever. She really only wants meat. Anonymous doesn't know all!

I beleive it is okay for dogs to eat figs. Figs are a fruit and grow naturally in the wild where animals would have no problem getting to them.

Of course. Don't bother stopping your dog to eat figs. My dog eats everything i eat. He eats apples, bananas, grapes, beans and a lot of other stuff. He eats absolutely everything. Give him to eat what ever he wants, but make sure its for eating. :)

I hate to tell you this but it\'s not good for your dog to eat what you eat. Grapes can be toxic.. Their systems cannot digest the rich foods that we eat.  add a comment

I agree with the anonymous user. Please don't think that it is logical for you to give advice on something you know nothing about. Grapes can be very toxic to dogs along with many other things that humans eat.  add a comment

Don't ever give your dog grapes or raisins, avocado, macadamia nuts, chocolate, coffee, onions, garlic, tomatoes, raw salmon, the list goes on. Google "foods unsafe for dogs".  add a comment

Grapes will put your dog in Rhenal failure. You are foolish to feed your dog the food you eat and shouldnt have a pet if you are not going to research their safety. Apples are also considered toxic to dogs. Educate yourself!  add a comment

Please Martin do not tell people it's ok to give dogs grapes. They cause acute kidney failure in a number of dogs, and we don't know why. The only way to know is to give tour dog some and see what happens, and that's not a good risk!  add a comment

Apples are not toxic to dogs. The seeds contain a minute amount of cyanide, but a dog would have to eat tons to have a negative effect. Grapes, raisins, onion, macadamia nuts, and cocoa are the big ones  add a comment

That's wonderful information...if the title of this thread was "Can my dog eat grapes?" Sadly, it's not.  add a comment

Beware of grapes & raisins: they can cause kidney failure within just 24 hours IF your dog is susceptible. Be careful of onions & garlic: they destroy the dog's red blood cells, causing anemia that develops very quickly after ingestion.  add a comment

No macadamia nuts because they can be fatal. As few as six raw or roasted macadamia nuts can poison a dog ill. Symptoms of poisoning include muscle tremors, weakness or paralysis of the hindquarters, vomiting, elevated body temperature, and rapid heart rate.  add a comment

Candy&gum, toothpaste, baked goods, and some diet foods are sweetened with xylitol. Xylitol can cause your dog's blood sugar to drop and can also cause liver failure. Initial symptoms include vomiting, lethargy, and loss of coordination. The dog may have seizures. Liver failure can occur within just a few days!  add a comment

Chocolate contains theobromine. It's in all kinds of chocolate, even white chocolate: most dangerous kinds are dark chocolate, chocolate mulch, and unsweetened baking chocolate. Eating chocolate, even just licking the icing bowl, can cause voniting, diarrhea, and excessive thirsty; can also cause abnormal heart rhythm, tremors, seizures, and death.

My dogs eat the figs that fall off our tree onto the porch. they seem to love them and the younger one will even jump to reach the higher ones! It makes them poop more, but they actually seem to feel better (more energy, etc.) after eating them.
