Municipalities have various ways of designating restricted parking. Often, the curbs are painted to show areas where parking is not allowed. These areas might be the location of a fire hydrant, an apron to the street, etc. Federal law does not restrict parking by a mailbox, but the specific city might in order to provide access for pickup.

It is not illegal to park in front of a mailbox, but it is inconvenient to the mailman and the person whose mail it is.

It is not illegal to park alongside a USPS mailbox per se. The curb may be painted to restrict parking so that USPS vehicles can easily access the mailbox, and in that case, it would be illegal to park there.

Technically, it can be illegal. If you park in front of a mailbox during a time when it is likely to obstruct mail delivery, then yes, it is illegal. But if you park there at night or on a Sunday, it should be fine.

In most cities, you can get a parking ticket for parking in front of a mailbox. There isn't really room for a mail carrier to safely deliver the mail if this area is blocked. However, it should be clearly marked if this is a parking violation.
