Is it difficult to replace wood balusters with iron?

I wouldn't say difficult, per se, just needs some planning. Are you putting them into a pre-existing unit? If so you have to be diligent about your measurements- also need to be sure that the fixture will accept the weight and determine how to affix it. I would replace the whole kit and kaboodle with a wrought iron set.

For this I would have to say it depends on what you call difficult. I think tedious is more the word for it than difficult. The old has to be taken down with care as not to damage the stair or and surrounding structure but the iron is not hard to install some filling of the stairs may be needed.
