If depression is suspected, it is wise to notify a health-care provider so that you or the person affected can be monitored and perhaps counseled. Yes, depression can occur after surgery. This can be common. There may be many reasons for the depression. Your father's depression should be brought to his physcian's attention as soon as possible. Depression can be successfully treated. The earlier it is caught, the better. Please have your father checked out.

It is almost a natural thing to be depressed after an operation especially if you are unable to resume your normal routine. This should pass as you recover.

Surgery represents a major event in a person's life, and it can be very traumatic in and of itself, not to mention the changes and adjustments that need to be made during recovery. Your father should definitely discuss his feelings with his surgeon and his primary care doctor to investigate treatment options.
