Is electric or propane better for a fake fireplace?

In my experience, electric is better. Though an electric fireplace will bump up your electric bill, you save yourself from the fumes of the propane. However, if you're looking for the cheaper option, use propane. It is expensive to buy the propane, but you won't need to buy as often.

If you are looking for low set up cost, portability or plane ease of use then electric. If heat or simply going on aesthetics choose propane.

There is no better, only preference. Electric may be cheaper in some instances because you can just shut it off. Propane is always partially on even when its off.

From a safety standpoint I prefer an electric fireplace, carbon monoxide buildup is always a concern with any appliance with an open flame.

Both electric and propane fireplaces have their advantages. If you live somewhere where you lose power often go with propane, that way you can still have heat even without electricity.

Electric a fireplace has a tendency to put off odors and with electric there is no odor there but with any form of gas there are the fumes it can put into the living space and that is very unhealthy.

Since a fake fireplace is only used for cosmetic or estectic purposes and not as a home heating source, electic is better. Mainly because it is less expensive and easier to install and maintain. Also, propane connectors sometime becomes clopped and does not work proper unless used on a regular basis.
