Is dark hardwood a good choice if the house doesn't have a lot of natural light?

I don't want the house to look like a cave.

Go with a mid tone hardwood, instead, so you don't get the feeling of being in a "cave". You will be happier if the wood is a lighter, but not the lightest. We have a medium tone hardwood floor and love it. Lighter tones are much easier to keep clean. They do not show the dust and drips as much.

Dark hardwood can be a good choice if the walls are sufficiently light and bright. There are programs to simulate paint and flooring of different colors. I would recommend a light or medium hardwood to avoid a dark cave-like house.

Small spaces need lots of light and mirrors to give the illussion of space. I would not use dark hardwood floors in any space that is less than 300 sq ft. Anything dark causes the space to looker smaller than it is.

Dark hardwood is always a good choice. Even if there's not too much natural light, the dark hardwood gives your home a natural impression and creates a nice, cosy atmosphere.
