Be sure the walls are a light color as well as the decor. They also make lighter colored curtains that are made to keep the sun out.

Well, you can keep the color of the walls light, white, beige, yellow. You can also make a contrast, by setting two layers of curtains, the first one white and thin, and behind the dark ones, that you only close when they're needed.

Don't have dark walls too or don't make them the same color. Vertical blinds are better. You can open them as much or little as you want.
