Is a wifi detector a good purchase?

It's great for finding free internet. Determine how valuable free internet is to you, then base your decision on whether or not you want it. There are privacy act violations when you connect to a wifi network that isn't yours though... don't get caught. :)

A Wifi detector is a good choice only if you need to scan to seach wifi networks without switch on your computer. For sure the best way to detect wifi networks is using your laptop, but in this case you have to spend some time for starting your OS and run the wifi detections.

In short, 1. Even tough it detects the wifi it may not tell whether the wifi is protected or not. 2. Good point is you do not need to switch on the laptop before knowing whether a wifi exists.

No sure. It depends on the price. If it is relatively inexpensive, it is worthy of it. It may be useful for people on the road or floating location. I would buy one if I frequently need wifi.
