Is a drain pan to catch overflow part of a heat pump installation in your house?

In most cases it should be. The only exception is if the relative humidity in the area in which you live is very low in which case the possibility of there being overflow is negligible.

This should be standard procedure when having this work done at your home. To be completely sure, simply ask the installer, if it isn't, request it.

Drain pans must be installed in the air handler unit of any heat pump. When it is in air conditioner mode, condensation drips from the cooling coils. The drain pan is used to collect this water and pipe it to the outside.

Drain pan is (as it name says) to collect overflow residue of heat pump installation. However, you should pay attention that you do not have too much overflow, since the drain pan could be over flooded and liquid will pour on the floor. So you should put a piece of rug under the pan, and call serviceman.
