As a form of energy, batteries are not cost effective to run a fan unless they are rechargeable. But their power retention fades over time and will need replacing.

No, they aren't because you go through batteries too quick that is unless you have recharge batteries which are equally expensive. If you are just looking for a temporary fix, a vacation fan, or something for a child to take to school then go for it because you will only be using it a few times anyway.
