In a contest over territory, why do two male deer butt heads until one gets tired and wanders off?

They are competing to be the most dominant male. Females will only mate with the dominant male in the herd.

I believe that to be a dominant factor. They want to see who will come out on top of it. The one tht stays gets the territory and is the more dominant one.
