Question by  bart (23)

If my truck's timing chain was broken, would it crank?

Answer by  TravisUSMC (979)

Your truck's starter is connected to the flywheel. It's this way on all vehicles. So when you turn the key the crankshaft will always turn. With the chain broken it will turn slowly but yes it will crank and sound horrible.

This depends on the design of the motor. Most likely, the motor will crank, but it is also likely that the pistons will interfere with the valves.

Yes it still should crank. Howver, if it is an interference engine you will hear clunking and crashing. If you can access the timing chain cover easily it might be worth removing it and seeing the condition of your tensioners and chain or belt. It's rare that timing chains break.

Yes the engine would still crank. The starter would still turn the engine over but the valves would not move and the piston might come in contact with them.
