The TIN (taxpayer identification number) that is requested on the IRS's Form W-9 is for verifying who you are -- your name is usually not enough since names are usually not unique. ID number are unique. For a sole proprietor, EIN or SSN is acceptable.

You need to only enter the EIN in the appropriate box for the employer. You do not need to put your social security number only the employees Social Security number.

Your 1040 form will reference your social security number, but you can use you EIN on the profit or loss from business forms. You can use social security for home use of business, if you had that.

EIN or SSN is fine. This is clearly stated -- just so you can feel sure -- on page three (top right column) of the W-9 Form pdf that you can find by googling "W-9".
