It is almost impossible to measure how much a baby takes from the breast at a time, but you should wake your baby every 2-3 hours and try to give them at least 2 ounces to begin with. Remember breastfed babies often grow slower than formula fed babies, so don't get discouraged.

Breast milk is always best so breastfeed as long as possible to build up the baby's strength and immune system.

Once you begin breastfeeding, your body will regulate in order to provide just what your baby needs, even as a preemie. This happens as the baby feeds and the body learns how much he/she needs.

Nipple shileds can be purchased at hospitals, lactation stores, maternity stores and places like Babies R Us. You may be able to find them at online stores that provide nursing accessoriees to new mothers. The best place to check is with your hospital and the lactation specialist there, they may even give them to you.
