If it is a paper filter, buy a new one. You can damage your motor by using an old one "sprayed with air". The true test hold up to light

You can either pull it out and use an air compressor and blow the dirt back thru the filter or you can take it and put it in water with dish soap and let is soak for about 30 mins and rinse it out then let dry, but be sure to use air filter oil if you wash it.

They are cheap, I would highly suggest buying a new one. If you prefer to clean it first smack the filter against your thigh or a wall to get the big peices out. Then use either compressed air or mild soap and water to clean it more thoroughly.

If you have a cleanable air filter made of cloth then you can hose it off, let it dry, and then oil it. It can be cleaned if it's paper.
