If you are truly unable to repay a debt write a very professional letter to the debtor and explain the situation. Keep it professional and include copies of any supporting documentation you may have. Try and send good faith payments until you are able to start making full payments again.

Always be kind and professional. State reasons for not being able to meet obligations. Propose how to solve the problem and invite to discuss the issue. Many times one can propose to make smaller payments over a longer period and many creditors will accept.

Either affirm (agree you owe) or deny the debt. If you agree, ask for a payment plan or payoff balance. If you deny it, demand their proof.
