I am trying to protect myself and make sure the debt collection agency has a right to collect this debt for the company I owe it to.

write a formal letter asking to show proof of debt being owed, along with the account number and your name. i would also ask for proof they are allowed to practice debt collection in your state.

If you can't remember the debt tell the company you are willing to discuss it but you will need proof this debt is actually yours.
