Make good sized trims and cuts to your wisteria plant in the winter. Remember to cut it in the way that you want it to grow.

Prune it twice yearly, summer and winter. In summer, cut new long branches down to six inches, after flowering. In winter, cut them back to three to five buds.

When I trim mine I take just the ends of what doesn't look healthy andything else needs to be left because everytime you trim a plant its like cutting your nails it sends the nutrient back to the part of the plant that is left.
