How should I go about shingling a very steep roof?

When shingling any roof, the most important thing is safety. If you can't harness yourself or somehow prevent yourself from falling, hire a professional. It's why they exist.

You will need a few 6 to 10 foot ladders and some long 2x10s. You will also need roof jacks which are triangular shaped brackets that are attached to the roof. After a few roof jacks are installed, lay a 2x10 on them. Lay the ladders flat on the roof to work you way up and down the roof.

You shingle a steep roof the same way you would shingle any other roof the only difference is the way you keep yourself up there if you are going to do a real steep roof you need to make sure you tie yourself off with a safety line.

Try using temporary roof jacks. Roof jacks are strong metal brackets that hold stiff wooden planks in place. You are supposed to nail through any of the open notches on the roof directly onto the decking.

To shingle a steep roof, install temporary roof jacks - strong metal brackets that hold stiff wooden planks. Simply nail through the open notch of the roof jack directly into the decking. The nail holding the jack gets covered by shingles. Once the entire roof is done, the planks and roof jack are removed, leaving the nail. Also, tie off!

Best way is to hire a professional. Otherwise, start at the bottom edge and work carefully to the peak, just like any other roof. Never work alone and use safety equipment.

You may want to nail boards on the roof so you have somewhere to place your feet. Of course these will have to be moved periodically as you put down shingles and removed so you can finish. Be sure to use safety harnesses with ropes secured to the top of the roof to catch you if you do fall.
