A large part of the answer depends on how advanced the tumor is. The various stages range from non invasive to deeply invasive with spread to other organs, known as metastatic spread. The seriousness of the disease depends in large part on the stage of the tumor spread. Early stage can be cured.

It is a life threatening condition but can be cured if found early enough, usually by surgery or sometimes radiotherapy.Larger growths or those far back on the tongue are worse.
