My personal opinion, major league baseball has been around since 1876. however, the national association played for five seasons prior from 1871 to 1875.

Major league baseball is about the oldest american organized pro sports league. the first pro team was created in 1869 todays cincinattii reds. So MLB marked this as the begining and celebrated 100 year aniversary in 1969.

Major League Baseball dates back to prior to 1900. There have been many books and documentaries produced about the history of baseball. If you are interested, I would recommend the documentary by Ken Burns that was on PBS. You can find out about the origins of baseball up until the 1990s.
