Smaller parrots tend to reach breeding age quicker than larger ones. Your parakeet can probably breed by one year, but it's much more important to be sure the bird is healthy and matched with a compatible mate, as well as a suitable nesting environment; suitable nesting materials, nutritious foods, safety.

Parakeets, also known as Budgerigars or simply "Budgies", must be at least one year of age before they are encouraged to mate. Both birds must be of age and unrelated.

As far as parakeets go, it's always best to wait until they are at least 12 to 18 months old before letting them breed. They will only lay eggs in a wooden nestbox. See your local aviary or petstore for advice and supplies.

I usually wait untill they are a year old. That way they are fully grown. However, they can be as young as six months old to actually mate.
