The amount depends on age and pregancy or lactation. For men and women it is 55 micrograms per day; for pregnant women 60 micrograms; for lactating women 70 micrograms. For children 9-14 it is 40 micrograms; for children 4-8 it is 30 micrograms; for children 1-3 20 micrograms. 7-12 months 20 and 0-6 15 micrograms adequate (no RDA for infants).

The daily needs for various age groups are: children 0-6 months 15 micrograms, 6-12 months 20 micrograms, ages 1-3 20 micrograms, ages 4-8 30 micrograms, ages 9-13 40 micrograms, and ages 14-19 55 micrograms. Selenium is a trace mineral required only in small amounts to maintain good health. The recommended dietary intake for children (1-12 years) and adults is 20-40 and 55-60 micrograms/day respectively. Major dietary source for selenium is plant foods. Also it is contained in meats and seafood.
