The RMS Titanic sank on the 15th of April 1912. Of 2,223 people, 1,517 were lost. There was insufficent lifeboats to take all the crew and passengers. Proportionally more men died than any other group due to the "women and children first" rule.

This is a historical question that has been up for debate for decades. While exact numbers are difficult to settle upon it has been approxmiated that at least 1500 people perished in the disaster. Numbers vary depending on source due to the time period and inexact record keeping of passenger lists.
