This depends upon your definition for religion. If this includes at least major denominations and sects of major religions, then the number is very easily in the thousands. Even so it is an incredibly large number. Humanity's search for meaning always brings a very diverse array of school of thought and tradition, and so religion is no different.

This is not an easy question. I don't think anybody can give you an exact answer. Some people view some religions as sects, therefore they would not consider that religion as a real religion. Also, for example, some people would consider the Baptists as only one religion, while others would differentiate the First Baptists, the Bible Baptists, the Southern Baptists.
