How many female beta fish should you have for every one male?

Should it be an even ratio?

It really depends on the size of the tank. It should be relatively even, but maybe less females than males because males tend to fight more. Make sure you have a large tank, beta fish will fight over space if they do not have enough room. Females will fight but they're less likely too.

Just one. Males,in my experience, can get just as nasty with females, as they do other males. I would get a small tank with a partition and if he shows readiness to mate, remove the partition, let the mating take place, and then separate the two fish again. The male will take care of eggs, nest and fry.
