Question by  mommy (15)

How long should a canine stay on steroids?

I think my dog has been on steroids too long but the vet does not think so.

Answer by  Binome (1975)

The answer is as long as the vet says. Your vet is trained in animal health care and you are not. If you have concerns, share them with your vet or even get a second opinion. Ultimately though, she/he is the animal doctor, and you're a worried (and probably not as objective as a consequence) pet owner. Trust the vet.

I think a month is more than enough but if it is going on more than a month than theres something wrong with that but ask another vet.

Dog vets are scientists, and sometimes they do not agree with each other. It's a good practice to get second opinions, especially when using drugs with the adverse and side effects steroids have.

It depends on what kind of steroids the dog is on and what the steroids are being used for. Ask another vet for a second opinion.

Answer by  blairemarie (128)

This depends on why your dog is on steroids, his age, etc. Long-term steroid use has negative side effects. If you are worried, seek a second opinion.

This can depend on several factors. One is what the dog is on steroids for, another is the general size of the dog, and yet another is the dog's reaction to the steroids. If you are worried, you can always get a second opinion, but unless you attended veterinary school, it's best to go with a professional's opinion.

Answer by  Aumlanka (291)

This really depends on why your dog is on steroids. There are a number of reasons your vet might put your dog on a steroids treatment and the duration of treatment would depend on the ailment. If you have concerns make sure you make this very clear when you talk to the veterinarian. You can also get a second opinion.

A canine should not be on them any longer than is necessary due to the side effects of weight gain and other long term effects.

Steroids are often prescribed to treat inflammation, and must be tapered down in order to discontinue. The length of time is determined by your veterinarian.

Answer by  meena (400)

Steroid is a good medicine to a dog. Steroids can be used only for a short period of time as per the vets advice.

The vet may know best what your dog needs. The dog is taking them for a reason to help make it better. Don't take the dog off it until the vet says so.
