How long does it take for your body to heal nerve damage?

Answer by  Susan (179)

Having personal experience with this I was told by my doctor that it would take up to a year for the nerves to heal. If the nerves were not normal in that year, I could expect them to never be normal again. Whatever I regained in the year is what I was going to have the rest of my life.

so I had surgery in May 2010 with severe nerve damage to my hands and arms. I still do not have them in complete use and the nerve meds do not work any more. Am I going to stay with this for the rest of my life?  add a comment

I was told the exact same thing. Reflex Sympathetic Dystrophy can take 3 months, one year or you may never fully recover. It is very frustrating.  add a comment

I was told the same but recent EMG is trying to say after 2 yrs the nerves are still healing. I hardly think so. Does anyone else have an opinion on this?  add a comment

I was told the same thing. Have you found anything that helps you? Neurontin hasn't worked and ins won't cover Lyrica. I failed P/T and the more I move around the worse the pain gets.  add a comment

Your Doctor is a moron, It can take several years for a nerve to heal, depending on location and any further compression on the nerve. I had nerve damage from Surgery and it took 7 years for it to heal.  add a comment

I have also used neurontin for nerve damage from cervical decompression surgery, it is now about over a year since surgery and about 8 months using neurontin. My doctor keeps increasing the dosages with no success as yet.  add a comment

Nerves do not heal. Over time, your body will sometimes "re-wire" itself to regain functioning, however. A lot depends upon the severity, location, and nature of the injury. Some neural injuries never heal, and some only partially do. Only your neurologist can tell you with any degree of certainty, and even they don't always know.

New nerves are created by neural stem cells found along the spinal nerves. Shrivelled nerves that are not completely dead are capable of recovery given the right nutrients and therapy- Glial cells are most important. Need B-vits, D3 (sunlight), protien, and excercise. Eat right, make nerves happeh. :)  add a comment

This corresponds with information a neurologist mentioned to me pertaining to a nerve injury a loved one had. Scary.  add a comment

Problem is surgeon says I am as good as I'm going to get, but EMG says after 2 yrs a nerve is still healing, meaning just one nerve. I tend to believe the surgeons experience.  add a comment

There is no way to know for sure if or when your nerve damage will heal. I was disabled for over seven years because of nerve damage. I still have constant pain, but nothing like it was. A lot of medications will actually make your pain worse.

The body can heal a nerve in about 4-6 weeks. That is an average time, it actually mostly depends on where the nerve is. If it is in your back it might take a little bit longer, compared to a shorter time if it is in your hand or arm.

It depends on the cause of the nerve damage I think. If it's the mylein sheath that's damaged, that should be re-growable (several months?). If the nerve is severed, it may never recover if the edges aren't able to reconnect.

I had heel spur removal surgery three weeks ago and now have some loss of feeling under both feet. the doc says this is due to neurapraxia and would heal in time. i hope this happens soon.

See a doctor; they can sew severed nerves back together, which makes it more likely they will be rewired. I had this done a month ago.

It depends on how bad the nerve damage was. If you sever it, it likely will never recover. Inflammation depends on the process, but usually in the neighbourhood of gradual improvement over 3 months.

It all depends there is no set amount of time for it to heal some never heal I got nerve damage 28 years ago and I still have partial nerve damage. It willa all depend on the extent of damage done to the nerves I truly wish you all the best.

I severed a nerve under my thumb and for what I have researched it all depends on the location. I have had numbness in part of my thumb and palm for a while but no pain. I would suggest for any one to see a doctor.

Honestly nerve damage never heals correctly. Once nerves are damaged severely (burned, frozen, severed, lack of blood) they are never 100 percent again. The body doesn't regenerate the nerves well or quickly. Perhaps with time the pain can become reduced, and more normal movement may return. It will take physical therapy and hard work to gain normal mobility.
