Some human knowledge is the result of measurable analysis: the sciences, engineering, physics. Other essential areas of knowledge defy measurement (emotions, spirituality) or fall somewhere in the middle (medicine, law, all the "social sciences"). Fiction literature cannot add to scientific knowledge but it can explore and develop those unmeasurable issues, provide context, preserve historical perspectives, and expand our conceptual vocabularies.

Literature describes the world. It forms a reality of knowledge. All literature cannot come in books. The literature provides knowledge. The literature of knowledge means a literature to teach. The literature of knowledge gives the knowledge about the world and what is happening in it. It includes the emotions, passions etc.

While the events portrayed in fiction may be fictional or fictionalized versions of real events, literature engages with deeper human truths and knowledge such as about people's psychology. Tragedy specifically is about the consequences of flaws, which is a good thing to know if you want to avoid problems.

If you read more it exercises your brain. Also, the more you read the greater vocabulary you will have, and so you become smarter by knowing more words. However, it obviously has to be novels rather than children stories.
