You use linseed oil with oil based paints. It works to make the paints more translucent and it causes them to dry slower so they can mix better.

Linseed oil is used to make oil paints. It is one of the three ingredients all paints have: pigments, glue, fillers. Linseed oil is a natural 'glue'.
