A balance measures the force (weight) of the object. This is linked to mass through the equation Force = mass x acceleration due to gravity (on Earth: 9. 81m^s-2)

To measure mass, you simply measure weight (any weighing scale will do) and then take into account the local gravity pull: mass=Weight/gravity acceleration

A balance compares the unknown mass to the mass of standard objects. After placing the unknown in one part of the balance, standard weights are placed to counter the weight of the unknown. Once they are balanced, the unknown mass is the sum of the standard weights.

A balance can electronic or mechanical as in the old fashioned scales. Mass is measured in grams, kilograms, pounds, ounces etc so when the object is placed on the balance the display panel shows the mass of the object. People often confuse weight and mass, weight cannot be determined by a balance it is mass multiplied by gravity.

A balance is used to measure mass by taking items of a known mass and adding them to the opposite side until the two sides are equal.

Well a balance is used to measure the amount something weighs. Therefore, you place the item on a measuring mass and then you watch the balance go up and down accordingly. You can move the insert piece until it settles into a certain area. Move up and down and it will settle on one piece.
