Most of the state is less than 500 feet above sea level. About half the city of New Orleans is from one to five feet below sea level. The highest point in the state, Mount Driskill, is only 535 feet above sea level.
The far majority of Louisana is actually above sea level. There is one excetion. In the city of New Orleans, the natural and man-made dikes along the Mississippi River protect an area that is 5 eight feet below sea level.
