How do you determine height above sea level?

Sea level is calculated using a still water technique; that is, scientists calculate the average between low and high tides, and factor out wind and waves. Once the level is determined, land from that point up is measured to determine the mean height above sea level.

To determine elevation, download Google Earth. In Google Earth, simply place the mouse over wherever you want, and the elevation is shown in the bottom left corner of the screen.

To determine the height above sea level at a point, all that is needed is the altitude of the particular point, which can be measured using an altimeter.

Today this is easy; you just turn your GPS on. In the old days you would use an altimeter (very similar to a barometer). If you needed more accuracy, or you wanted to map larger areas, triangulation was the best method.
