Liquid leather repair products are not literally liquid leather. They are plastics or polymers made in various colors. Follow the instructions provided. Basically, the liquid leather bonds to the edges and the surface of the leather. You use the plastic template to match the texture. You can get good results.

To my understanding, it is basically a paint like substance that can be matched to various color of couches. The reason why liquid leather works, is because of the type of texture that most leather couches are made out of can be closely matched to that of the paint like substance that is used to 'cover' the hole.
