Answer by  Wintershade (9)

One carat equals to 0.2 grams, i.e. 200 miligrams (a miligram is a thousandth piece of a gram). Thus, one gram would equal 5 carats (5 x 200 miligrams = 1000 miligrams = 1 gram). So in order to calculate carats to grams, one has to multiply the number of carats by 0.2.

1 carat is equivalent to 1/5 of a gram or .2 grams which is 200 milligrams. Small stones like a .10 carat stone are measured by points. 1/100th of a carat is one point and stones are measured to the nearest 100th of a carat. This system of measurement was adopted in the United States in 1913.
